Dean's Honors Program

Overview

The Dean's Honors Program allows admitted first-year students with an 88 high school GPA, 1000 on the SAT/19 on the ACT, or higher to pursue their educational goals through specially designed courses and out-of-class experiences.

Requirements

Dean's Honors Program students complete four courses (three meet Intellectual Foundations requirements; the fourth is the capstone course in the major with an interdisciplinary component).

Grade Point Average

  • You may be eligible if you have an 88 or higher high-school grade point average
  • You must maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average

Required Classes (6 credits)

  • (3 credits) CWP 101 or CWP 102 – Special section of College Writing for Dean’s Honors students (usually in first semester)
     
  • (3 credits) Capstone Course project with an interdisciplinary component (usually in fourth year)

Electives (6 credits)

Select two from Dean's Honors courses in the following Intellectual Foundations categories (offerings vary):

  • Arts
  • Humanities
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning
  • Diversity
  • Foundations of Civilizations

Other Requirements

  • Meet other non-credit requirements specific to your academic school, such as attending lectures and events, making scholarly presentations, and engaging in undergraduate research.

Note: High school courses at the Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) level may satisfy college requirements. High school foreign language courses may satisfy Buffalo State’s foreign-language requirement.

Honors Residence Hall and Lounge

Bishop Hall is undergoing a dramatic $16.1 million conversion from an office building to a state-of-the-art residence hall that will house Honors Program students. Bishop is in the heart of campus next to the Campbell Student Union. Double occupancy rooms provide furnishings and finishes ideal for studying and connecting with other students. Each floor has privacy baths, study rooms, lounge and laundry and students have access to free WiFi and free printing. The lower level of Bishop includes multipurpose and gaming rooms as well as a classroom for honors classes, activities, seminars, and movies. Living in Honors housing is optional. Space is limited, and rooms are assigned as requests are received, so please make your reservation early!
